It used to be America the Brave, but now it looks like America the Afraid.
Donald Trump was elected by a ground swell of fear from people who feel left behind and marginalized in where the nations has gone. Fear for an economic future, a social future that will never be what it was 30 years ago. Fear that they have no place in the coming decades. And that is a realistic fear, those Midwest Factory jobs are not coming back; a steel mill that use to employ 3500 people now has the same output with only 500 employees.... Automation has damaged more jobs that trade. International Trade deals have gotten the rap for costing jobs, but in fact looking at the numbers those deals have been net positive for the US economy, just not for US workforce or the middle class. Scrap those deals and lessen the benefits to the US economy and that will not create new job either. Sorry but all those folks in rural America need to do the hard thing and re-tool themselves for jobs that will be here in the future.
I hope that the Trump Administration gets a big big infrastructure bill (the kind President Obama has been seeking for years) that will help those folks in the short run. But that is not the answer for everyone, and certainly not for those early in their work life. The nation and world will not stop changing, get over that fear and move forward.
And the Reaction to a President Elect Trump has been fear within communities who feel vulnerable. LGBT communities, Hispanic Communities, Muslim Communities, Women who support full access to Reproductive care. A bunch of wailing and rending of cloth over the potential actions of an administration that has not even taken office yet. The Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Acts were decades in building the support for. There was blood shed and tears shed and heart break aplenty along that road and after, but the victory was still to be gained. Yes, there may be legislative assaults that you will have to endure, legal assaults you have to endure; but it is your choice to surrender or fight for what you believe in.
Left and Right, there is fear. There is no moving forward or growth in fear. If you give into fear, you either lash out or cower. It is time to remember who we are and stand up for ourselves and our futures without lashing out at those who see things differently, and move forward. Be America the Brave, argue with each other without hate, without letting the fears you feel be expressed in lasing out at others.
